Audison Prima AP 2 MV Wide Range Speaker

2″ Wide-Band Speaker

Designed as an OEM replacement for dash-mounted 2″ speakers in many Mercedes, Toyota, and GM vehicles, this high-quality wide-range speaker is provoking much interest from car audio system designers.

For those looking to replicate perfect hi-fi sound, a car seems to be an impossible environment. Speaker positioning is the greatest challenge. Woofers are often positioned low down in the doors, firing at the knees or even ankles of the occupants, while tweeters sit up on the dashboard or in the base of the A-pillars, firing across the vehicle or facing upwards, bouncing sound off the windscreen.

Woofers are often installed low down in the door

The distance between woofers and tweeters can prove a severe impediment when setting up a car audio system, even when using a Digital Signal Processor (DSP). However, the Audison Prima AP 2 MV wide-band speaker can come into its own under such circumstances.

A frequency response of 150Hz—20kHz enables the crossover points between woofers and tweeters to be set much lower, offering a more coherent response from mid- to high-frequency performance.

Built to exacting standards, these rugged 2″ speakers feature a neodymium magnet and a 1″ voice coil. A copper shorting ring stabilises and flattens out impedance, while a rigid and lightweight aluminium cone provides precision and excellent response.

Typical dash-top 2″ speaker position

The speakers can perform as mid to high-frequency speakers in a 2-way system or mid-range in a 3-way system. This flexibility is subject to your car audio specialist being able to find somewhere to mount them in vehicles without a standard 2″ speaker position. Still, they are small enough to build into an A-pillar build.

We recently auditioned a classic Mercedes 300 SE. This car had 2″ positions on top of the dashboard, and the installer had fabricated 6″ speaker mounts in the door pockets. The sound was exceptional, extremely coherent, and dynamic. We are now big fans of this solution in vehicles with “difficult” mounting positions.

Your installer is best placed to decide if these speakers would suit your particular car, but it is worth finding out more, in our opinion!
