Excursion - We're not all going on a summer holiday!

Excursion is the distance a speaker cone moves in a forward and backward direction. It is very important in car audio installation as clearances between the speaker cone and the door card or other surround panels are always very tight. It can also be a key pointer to expected performance.

Looking at a speaker's specifications, you will often see references to Xmax and sometimes Xmech.

Why do we have two parameters for what is essentially the same thing? Well, they are different. They both describe cone movement but to different limits.

Xmax describes how far a cone and associated voice coil will move before the whole or part of the coil leaves the full influence of the magnet. Exceeding this limit will lead to a non-linear performance.

Xmech is the physical limit of movement before the coil "bottoms out" on the magnet. If the figure is exceeded, severe damage will occur. Motor manufacturers commonly falsely boost bass frequencies to impress unwitting customers in the showroom. Once the vehicle is in motion, the bass is commonly reduced to prevent damage once the volume is turned up to overpower wind and road noise.

The excursion of a speaker is subject to the effect of the depth of the magnet and voice coil, but also the surround - A strip of material around the circumference of the cone which attaches to the speaker chassis, and the spider - A disc of sprung material which attaches to the cone just above the voice coil and the chassis of the speaker.

The recently launched Audison Voce II woofer, AV 6.5 P II, has a 63% greater excursion compared to its predecessor. This ensures that it reproduces bass and even sub-bass at greater levels. Just in case, Audison has also created the AV 6.5 S II, which has a smaller, more slimline profile. This has a lesser excursion yet is still capable of stunning bass/mid-bass performance. It is perfect for in-car use.
